The knowledge of history sometimes gives shivering to the conscious people of this information age. Today, we are fortunate to have mass communication medium available with us. Every individual have access to information. It is just a matter of time, when our sluggish politicians and bureaucratic will have to accept these facts. They will have to provide liberty to access information to people at people’s will.
People at top have been feeling comfortable in molding and transmitting information for their short term gains. Common people have been fooled around with fabricated messages. But, in today’s information age when people can access information on the click of their mouse, it will be difficult to keep truth hidden for long time. However, for normal conscious people, the lack of correct information remains a challenge. The confession by Sharad Pawar, Ex Chief Minister of Maharastra may not have any relevance in today’s scenario, especially when Government want to deal with even nation threat through the talk going under the carpet, but it throws one very conclusive impression. This is regarding the availability of truth. Can we be sure of any information emerging on the front page of Indian dailies? This is not just a doubt, it is a challenge. Till we have true information, how can we have wisdom?
Truth is God. Are we dealing with truth like God? This is a challenge for the people who have truth. This is a challenge for the people who are looking for truth. It is difficult for all educated and conscious people to have correct information for correct judgments. It is essential and important in such a scarce situation that an individual creates a wisdom domain for her life. This has to be a continuous and changing process. Time and situation change so fast that we have to be very dynamic not to get cheated by our own decisions. We must create a wisdom domain where we are in a position to take correct decisions in life.
Just think about news channels. There are plenty of news channels available. We sit in front of televisions screen, on a big cushioned imported Italian sofa, take the remote in hand, we have all these luxury, and then we keep switching on these channels. We hardly get any satisfaction with the kind of reporting of these channels. We hardly get contented with the information we get on these channels. We may have air-conditioned rooms with continuous power supply. We may have the luxury of continuous tea and coffee and even snacks to kill our monotony but ultimately when the question of channels and their contents come up, we are foxed, confused, at times perturbed about the kind of information they keep showing viewers. In spite of all the luxury of life, we are disturbed. We are not at peace. We lack wisdom.
The information content is just one issue; the major issue is the authentication of information. Often these new channels blatantly report next day that the news shown on the previous day was not correct. There was some misunderstanding. Forget about the news channels, think of the print media. There is plenty available. One newspaper reports something, another reports an entirely different thing. The areas of concern for different newspapers remain different. The depth of concern for various issues remains different. The solutions for these issues are altogether a different ballgame. And finally, any individual will agree with me that it is a voluminous task to decide sitting in the most advanced drawing room in a metropolitan city of the fastest developing economy in the world, how far we can verify and authenticate the contents and validity of information? How do we decide which contents are good and how far they are authenticated?
Recently, even in May 2005 when more than 50 people died in various demonstrations across the world over the damage and demarcate of Koran, the news magazine, Newsweek, retracted the story. These are common examples and in due course of time, these are going to continue. Just as parents are not at fault for being irrelevant because of the creation of the ‘generation valley’, it is not the fault of any channels, newspapers or magazines. With the kind of information floating around in society today, it is an everyday affair. We have to be very cautious and conscientious to accept information and face the challenges of our day-to-day life. The simplest and easiest way in such a confusing situation is to create a wisdom domain which matches our life.
Decisions about the selection of channels, newspaper and magazines are one side of the story, but the serious issues are the decisions in our day to day life. How do we take them? I personally feel all these issues are correlated. There are plenty of books available in the market. They deal with elaborate studies. They give examples of successful companies and individuals. They are available physically in the developed world.
The question of doubt comes up that these practices and applications developed in the developed world by some developed people; we are forced to employ them in the environment of a developing world for the poor. The two situations are different. The problems are different. The people are different. The seriousness is different. The results are different. The resources are different. How can it be suitable with these differences to give better and effective results? Do we have a choice? It is my endeavour to bridge the differences and provide critical and analytical solutions of these simple day-to-day problems which are affecting our life drastically. Can we take the help of this news article to understand the importance of validity and correctness of information? Shall we treat truth as God? Is it available easily? Think over and Let me know your views. I shall be grateful.
